Agriculture 3.0

The agricultural sector suffers up until today from lagging integration of new technologies. It remains a sector with a predominantly manual (yet it’s becoming increasingly knowledge-intensive) and poorly traceable approach.

To revoke this lack of efficiency and traceability and achieve a smooth and efficient operation across numerous plots where multiple teams work, it’s essential to have access to timely, accurate information that is tailored to specific locations and conditions. This is critical in helping farmers make the most of their resources in often changing circumstances.

Currently, many farmers are already adopting the use of drones to identify changes in their crops, such as the presence of pests or water shortages.

At Naranjas del Carmen, we are aware that technology has already been our great ally in the past. Selling our product directly through online platforms has revolutionized our way of farming by allowing us to  forecast demand and avoid food waste. Furthermore, not going through intermediaries enables us to send the freshest possible products directly to the consumer and know who we are cultivating for. Now technology is being directly implemented in the fields, marking the advent of Agriculture 3.0.

One of the new tools is the use of a photo application and microprocessors on the tags of adopted trees which will provide precise agronomic information about each tree to ensure traceability and transparency.

We are implementing automated irrigation systems to optimize water usage and ensure sustainable agricultural practices. This allows us to provide the precise and efficient amount of water needed for each plant and alerts us in case of leaks, thus avoiding wastage.

Furthermore, we use virtual and interactive maps for our fields. These help us optimize space, plan crops, and identify areas requiring special attention. Thanks to this technology, we can make informed decisions to improve the productivity and sustainability of our farms.

We are also investing in the installation of solar panels to power our agricultural operations with clean and renewable energy. This reduces our dependence on fossil fuels and contributes to the reduction of our carbon footprint.

Agriculture 3.0 represents a significant advancement in our way of cultivating the land. By integrating technology into our agricultural practices, we improve the efficiency, sustainability, and transparency of our business. We are proud to contribute to the future of agriculture by adopting these innovations for the benefit of the environment and our farming community.

This modernization of the sector could help minimize the gap between urban and rural areas and thus make the sector more attractive to new generations which, as we discussed in another article, remains a major challenge.
